Post Office Building on the Aventine

A. Libera – M. De Renzi, Post Office Building on the Aventine in Rome, 1933-1934

The Post Office Building on the Aventine Hill in Rome Ostiense, A. Libera – M. De Renzi, Rome Italy 1933-1934, is a postal building in Rome located in Via Marmorata, in the San Saba district.
It hosts the Roma Ostiense post office (Frazionario 55645).

History
The construction of this post office, together with those of Viale Mazzini, Via Taranto and Piazza Bologna, was part of the development plan of the Urbe, which envisaged the decentralization of services in areas outside the historic core of the city. In 1932 the competition for the construction of the work, announced by the Ministry of Communications, was won by the architect Adalberto Libera.
Libera and Mario De Renzi also submitted projects for the post office buildings in Piazza Bologna, Viale Mazzini and Via Taranto for the same competition, two signed by Libera and two signed by De Renzi, as the competition required the signature of only one designer. For this reason, De Renzi is often not mentioned in the projects and only later was he found to be co-author of the Post Office in Via Marmorata.

Description
Entrance to the public: The palace presents itself, on a wide staircase, with a rigorous symmetrical layout, based on geometric ratios and the golden section. It is divided into three volumes arranged in a U and used for different functions. Covered in smooth white marble, on the front it has a portico that closes the rectangular courtyard.

The terminals feature a motif of crossed diagonals that hide the internal stairways.
