La Basilica of Lechaion, located near the ancient port of Corinth, is one of the most impressive early Christian complexes in Greece. Built in the 5th century AD, it stood in a strategic position along the road connecting the city to its port on the Gulf of Corinth, thus assuming a religious as well as symbolic role for those arriving by sea.
It is a large three-nave basilica with a narthex, atrium, and adjoining rooms, likely part of an episcopal complex. Its dimensions were remarkable for the time: over 180 meters in total length, including the exterior spaces and the portico, a sign of the importance of the local Christian community.
The church is often identified with the Basilica of Saint Leonidas, named after the third-century Corinthian martyr to whom it was dedicated. According to tradition, the saint and his companions were martyred at sea, and the proximity to the port makes this significant dedication plausible.
From an architectural point of view, the building featured:
- Basilica plan with three naves divided by colonnades
- Semicircular apse facing east
- Large narthex and porticoed atrium
- Mosaic floors with geometric and symbolic motifs
- Baptismal structures and service areas
Archaeological excavations have revealed high-quality mosaics and traces of the construction phases, as well as signs of damage caused by the earthquakes that struck the region between the 6th and 7th centuries, an event that gradually led to the complex's abandonment.
Today, the basilica appears as a vast field of ruins, but the layout is still crystal clear: one can perceive the monumentality of the space and its close relationship with the coastal landscape. It is a fascinating site because it illustrates Corinth's transformation from a great Roman city to a Late Antique Christian center.
