Bauhaus Director's House
Walter Gropius – Gropiusallee 38, Dessau Germany, 1925-1926
Year
1925 - 1926
Architect
Walter Gropius
Gropius designed a series of semi-detached houses for the masters of design who taught at the Bauhaus. This small neighborhood, nestled in a pine forest near the school building itself, was an idyllic home for artists such as Lyonel Feininger, Oskar Schlemmer and Gropius himself. They were abandoned in the 30s, when Germany was plunged into war and suffered years of damage from military conflict and neglect.
The houses have been renovated, those of Walter Gropius and the artist László Moholy-Nagy are yet to be completed. Both structures were destroyed during an air raid on Dessau during World War II.
