Abbey of the Holy Trinity

Abbey of the Holy Trinity in Cava de' Tirreni. 11th century

The abbey stands on a hill, approximately 400 metres above sea level, 3 km from the centre of the town of Cava de' Tirreni and a short distance from the Amalfi coast and the Nocera countryside.
The founder of the Abbey of the Holy Trinity of Cava was Saint Alferio Pappacarbone, a nobleman from Salerno of Lombard origin who studied in Cluny, who in 1011 retreated beneath the large Arsicia cave at the foot of Mount Finestra in the current territory of the municipality of Cava de' Tirreni, to spend the life of a hermit there.
