The Teatro Grande in Pompeii, also known as the Teatro Grande or Teatro Romano, is one of the most important and well-preserved archaeological sites of the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, located near Naples, Italy. Built around 80 BC, it is one of the oldest and largest theaters in ancient Rome, with a capacity of about 5.000 spectators.
The theatre was used for plays, poetry recitations, music and other public performances. Its construction is typical of Roman theatres, with a semicircular cavea dug into the hill and a stage behind it, which served as a stage for the actors.
The building was buried under volcanic ash during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, which destroyed Pompeii along with other surrounding cities. The extraordinary preservation of the buildings of Pompeii is due to the fact that they remained buried under a layer of ash and lapilli for almost 1.700 years, until their discovery in the XNUMXth century.
Today, the Teatro Grande is one of Pompeii's main tourist sites, attracting visitors who want to immerse themselves in the life of ancient Rome and the drama of its destruction.
