Weissenhof house – Maison double

Le Corbusier – House in the Weissenhof district, Stuttgart Germany, 1927

The double house combines two different symmetrical apartments joined by a row of pilotis and a ribbon window as long as the building.
This architecture has a steel structure and clearly represents the home conceived as a “machine for living”: inside, a narrow corridor acts as a distributor and connection between the various rooms, Le Corbusier will underline that it has the same dimensions as those found in train carriages.
This architecture presents the changes in the use of space between day and night.
Living rooms are converted into bedrooms at night, while foldaway bed furniture allows for free space during the day.
On the top floor, study-library areas open onto the roof garden which becomes a fundamental place for the modern concept of living.
