The Double House was designed by MVRDV for two families, built in 1997 in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Both families face the outside and have their own entrances. The families live in their living spaces completely independently, sharing only the back garden.
At the design stage the two families could not decide who would get better views, better entrances and so on. So Bjarne Mastenbroek e Winy Maas they developed an interlocking system for the architecture to make it seem like they have much more space. The architecture pushes and pulls at each floor, taking away space at one point, then regaining it at the next floor. The dividing wall runs across the two spaces in a zigzag pattern.
