Gothenburg Law Courts Annex

Erik Gunnar Asplund – Gothenburg Law Courts Annex, 1934-1937

Gothenburg City Hall (Swedish: Göteborgs rådhus) is located in Gothenburg, Sweden. It was designed in the Beaux-Arts style and was primarily used as a courthouse until 2010.

The oldest building was built around 1670. The architect was Nicodemus Tessin the Elder. The newest part was completed in 1936 after the planning and supervision of the architect Gunnar Asplund.
His way of blending the old and the new has achieved international recognition.

The façade is glossy and the interior walls are paneled in wood, while the interior is dominated by the spacious hall with its skylights and glass ceiling overlooking the courtyard. In connection with the addition, the oldest part of the town hall's interior was modernized. Gunnar Asplund also designed custom-made furniture, lamps and textiles for the building.
