House in Sri Lanka Tadao Ando

The Tadao Ando-designed house on the southern coast of Sri Lanka tests the limits of local craftsmanship and technology by building primarily in exposed concrete.

The living quarters are arranged in three wings that end in a central courtyard and a grand staircase. Ascending to the piano nobile, to the left of the staircase is the bedroom wing. To the right, at 90°, is the study and gallery wing, which tapers to the landscape. At 45° is a two-story lower wing, containing a double-height living and dining room, with a rooftop pool and cantilevered terrace, overlooking the staircase.
Between the studio and the living rooms is a service core that houses the kitchen and ancillary spaces. This area includes a master suite on the upper level and a service entrance that separates the artist's studio from the domestic quarters that occupy the ground floor.

Weeraratne one of the associate architects applauds Ando's ability to capture the landscape so well, stating that “what amazed me the most is that Ando was a true master. He had not even visited the site, yet he managed to be so precise in placing the views. This is the proof of years of practice".
