Model factory
Walter Gropius – Model factory for the Cologne Exhibition of 1914
Year
1914
Architect
Walter Gropius
In 1914 Gropius designed, together with Adolf Meyer, the Werkbund Pavilion for the Cologne Exhibition in Germany; the building is composed of several volumes on an axial and symmetrical plan, broken only by the Motor Pavilion (which is flanked on one side by a classical statue and on the other by a turbine, celebrating the cultured spirit of the German industrial elite). The main entrance consists of a severe brick volume flanked by two glass cylinders containing spiral staircases; following the central path you arrive at the Hall of Machines, a space treated like a railway shed.
