Robinson house
Marcel Breuer – Robinson house, Williamstown, Massachusetts-USA, 1947
Year
1947
Architect
Marcel Breuer
Designed by Breuer for Preston and Helen Robinson, it sits on over 40 acres of land, with a design that maximizes integration with its surroundings.
This expansive, single-level home sits serenely on a large site and commands sweeping views of the Berkshire Mountains. The floor plan is binuclear, with a clear division between living and sleeping areas, arranged under a butterfly roof topped with cantilevered trusses. Nature permeates the structure with internal plantings and courtyards, while fieldstone walls extend to embrace the landscape. Extensive use of glass in the living and dining room makes the distant hills the outer boundary of the interior space, ever-changing with the seasons and changing light.
