Saltzman House

Richard Meier – East Hampton-New York USA, 1967-1970

The Saltzman House site is set slightly inland from the Atlantic Ocean on a flat acre of land near the tip of Long Island. The parallel relationship between the front edge of the property and the shoreline dictated the siting of the house, which is elevated to allow views of the ocean, the open shoreline, and Montauk Point.
From a distance, the cubic composition appears to flatten into a two-dimensional shape against the backdrop of earth and sky.
As in the Smith House, the organization of the plan is based on a programmatic separation of public and private areas. Here, however, the two zones interpenetrate to a greater extent.
The public space opens up like a funnel as the structure rises, so that the integrity of the enclosed private zone, located along two adjacent sides of the house, is partially eroded at the second level, only to disappear entirely at the third.
The ocean view is revealed as you move upwards.

Two circulation systems run through the building. Originating from an exterior staircase connecting to a small guesthouse, the first system leads to a bridge that connects the guesthouse to the main house. On the second level, it continues through interior stairs along the side of the house that connect the second level to the third. The second circulation system, serving the upper level, ascends diagonally through the center of the house, the junction between the public and private zones. Both systems connect to an exterior spiral staircase at the diagonal corner opposite the entrance.
