Smith House

Richard Meier – Darien-Connecticut USA, 1965-1967

The Smith House is a residence in the municipality of Darien (Connecticut) USA. It was the first work realized by the architect Richard Meier, between 1965 and 1967. The building, on three floors, whose upper floors are mezzanines, is based on the basic principle of the relationship with the surrounding environment, in this case the lake, since the house is located right on the shore, near a small landing.
The front is completely emptied through large floor-to-ceiling windows, while the back is closed and has few and small openings. The front, among other things, faces the sea and is designed to be the public meeting place of the house, with the living room on the ground floor, the dining room on the first floor and a playroom for children on the mezzanine of the second floor. The back of the building houses all the private rooms, such as the bedrooms, bathrooms and study. In terms of external view, the building is remarkably varied, with a continuous alternation of light and shade, glass, walls and prominent elements such as the rounded external staircase and the emerging fireplace. At the back, a long walkway leads to the main entrance, located on the first floor and not on the ground floor, which is, on this elevation, partially underground due to the very uneven terrain. The walkway then leads to a garage reachable from a private road that branches off from the main road, located further north. The project uses only wood and steel, the latter reserved for the four load-bearing pillars on the facade. The only masonry element is the fireplace, also located on the front elevation. In the following years the villa was expanded towards the north-east, incorporating the external storage room-warehouse into the structure, raising it up to the roof and modifying some architectural details.
