Stillman House II
Marcel Breuer – Stillman house II, Litchfield, CT USA 1963-1967
Year
1965
Architect
Marcel Breuer
Rufus and Leslie Stillman asked Breuer to design a second home in Litchfield, Connecticut, nearly 15 years after the architect built their first. The U-shaped house was nestled into the base of a hill and featured pale, glass-fronted walls atop a stone block foundation. Breuer’s partner Herbert Beckhard assisted with the design.
The main floor contained a central living/dining/kitchen area with a glass wall overlooking an open courtyard enclosed by a stone wall. The children's sleeping quarters were located in the west wing, while the east wing contained a storage room, darkroom, and master bedroom suite. The lower level housed a garage. A 15-foot retaining wall runs back from the house on the east side. In the mid-70s, Breuer designed yet another third house for these customers and close friends.
