The attached badge of the Oscar Niemeyer Museum resembles a human eye and gave the museum a new identity. The extension was completed and opened to the public in 2003, and the Novo Museu was renamed the Oscar Niemeyer Museum in the same year. Built of reinforced concrete, a 30 meter high structure is located above a water basin and is connected to the main museum building by a futuristic underground passage. The new building contains a large spiral staircase between its levels. The two facades with diamond-shaped glass of the "eye" of the building are constructed of glass and steel and provide natural light to an exhibition space.
