The building is located on the corner of Madison Avenue and 75th Street, designed by architect Marcel Breuer together with Hamilton Smith.
Breuer created this architecture with a strong modernist imprint in a neighborhood of traditional houses, in limestone and brick, typical of post-war condominiums. Considered gloomy, heavy and even brutal at the time of its completion in 1966, Breuer's building is now recognized as bold, strong and innovative. It has become one of the most important buildings in New York.
