Scheu House

In 1912, a flat terrace roof was built for the first time in Vienna.

The Scheu House, built by Adolf Loos between 1912 and 1913 for the lawyer Gustav Scheu and his wife Helen, was not only the first house built for the architect, but also one of the first buildings with the palace architecture. This feature caused many conflicts with the municipal authorities. The owner had to commit to covering the front with ivy, which he did on the side facing the garden.
For the first time in this building Loos used the rational principle of “terracing” which, together with the Raumplan, define the two architectural concepts characteristic of the terraced houses designed by the Czech architect.
Loos applied the principle of terracing and the idea of accessing the terrace, located on the east side of the house, from any of the bedrooms, as a symbol of personal freedom.
