House K

Sou Fujimoto Architects – House k, Nishinomiya, Hyogo Japan, 2012

The house is located in a quiet place in the middle of the residential district of Nishinomiya, Hyogo Prefecture.
Reflecting on how to make the interior of the house and the garden coexist, raising the view towards the woods that extend to the west, I thought that the interior and the garden could become strongly contiguous, at this moment I had the idea of "roof = garden" that extends diagonally.
The roof garden slowly rises like a hill, creating a living space that simultaneously reaches down. Dotted with potted trees that seem to float on the roof, it is like a semi-natural, semi-artificial mountain landscape. As a series of openings capture the soft light, the slope vividly cuts out the woodland landscape and sky with an unexpected sense of distance.
The interior space of the studio consists of three different floor levels. The living space in the basement is dug out 1,5 meters, the dining room and kitchen extend from the entrance to the ground floor, and the children's space is about 2,5 meters higher than the steps where people can sit in various ways. The bathroom and master bedroom are stored under those steps.

The space contains these different levels of space continuously, where randomly bored windows overlap. The difference thus created in the height of the line of sight changes the spatial breadth and composure in diversity.

With this house it was significant to connect the inside and the roof garden. Also, not only in one place but if it was possible to move back and forth in and out at the different height levels, the life that passes through the living space and this mountain garden would definitely become richer. In the end it was possible to create the paths to access this garden from all three different levels described above. In this way you can move freely in and out, I wanted to generate a more natural relationship between inside and outside that is different from the normal architecture of its garden and floor that are distinct from each other.

At the top of the garden slope is a small hut. Like a pergola, it is a shelter that completes the life in the garden while also being like a cottage, which I hope, together with some furniture on the roof, suggests an opportunity to enjoy this new form of garden.
