Maison Cook

Le Corbusier – Maison Cook, 1926

Here, the certainties acquired up to that moment have been applied quite clearly: the pilotis, the hanging garden, the free floor, the free facade, the ribbon windows with sliding doors. The line followed here is an "automatic line" supplied by simple elements of architecture on a human scale such as the height of the attics, the dimensions of windows, doors, balustrades. The classic plan is reversed here: the lower part of the house is open.
The entrance is in the highest part of the house. One step and we are directly on the roof garden overlooking the vast expanse of the Bois de Boulogne.
Extract from Le Corbusier, Oeuvre complète, volume 1, 1910-1929.
