Walter Gropius – Model factory for the 1914 Cologne exhibition
Year
1914
Architect
Walter Gropius
In 1914 Gropius designs, together with Adolf Meyer, the Werkbund Pavilion for the Cologne exhibition; the building consists of several volumes on an axial and symmetrical system, broken only by the Motor Pavilion (which is flanked on one side by a classical statue and on the other by a turbine, in celebration of the cultured spirit of the industrial elite German). The main entrance consists of a severe brick volume flanked by two glass cylinders containing helical stairs; following the central path you arrive at the Machine Room, a space treated like a railway shed.
