José Rafael Moneo Vallés, better known as Rafael Moneo (Tudela, 9 May 1937), is a Spanish architect among the best known on the international scene.
After graduating from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura in Madrid (ETSAM) in 1961, he worked with Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oiza and then at Jørn Utzon’s studio in Hellebaek, Denmark, for two years. From 1963 to 1965 he studied in Rome, where he won a scholarship to the Spanish Academy. In 1966, upon his return to Spain, he opened his own studio in Madrid and taught at ETSAM. In 1976 he left for the United States and worked for two years at the Institute of Architecture and Urban Studies in New York.
