Erosion Defense – Ribalta viva
Dwg file at 1:100 scale (meters)
The living bank is made up of alternating layers of living bundles, arranged longitudinally along the bank, and living willow branches, arranged transversally, above the average water level.
In order to reconstitute an eroded bank, this module must be repeated until the erosion is filled and the desired height is reached. It is completed on the back of the fascines with inert filling.
Dead material is placed below the average water level. The bundles are fixed with wooden and iron stakes, arranged in alternating orientations.
This technique is used in bank restorations in medium-energy watercourses when the stability of the bank cannot be improved by decreasing the slope. The live bank has an immediate effect because the branches exert a mechanical protection and slow down the water, decreasing its erosive capacity; over time the protective capacity increases thanks to the rooting of the willow rods.
