MAXXI Rome – Project Zaha Hadid Architects

The cross-section detail of the MAXXI roof highlights one of the most representative elements of the entire building: the linear reinforced concrete structural system that integrates light, structure and envelope in a single architectural device.

The large reinforced concrete beams, arranged parallel to each other according to the fluid layout, define the spatial rhythm of the galleries. Linear skylights are inserted between each beam, allowing for a controlled entry of overhead light. These are not simple openings in the roof, but a complex system combining glazing, screening, and a secondary metal structure, ensuring uniform light and protecting the exhibits.

The roofing package is integrated within the structural envelope: insulation, waterproofing, and technical layers are coordinated with the design of the beams, maintaining the formal continuity of the exposed intrados. The absence of false ceilings reinforces the material character of the concrete and highlights the building's structural integrity.

This detail clarifies how, at MAXXI, the structure is not a hidden element but an integral part of the architectural language. The concrete "ribs" perform more than just a load-bearing function: they orient the space, modulate the light, and construct the galleries' visual identity.

The control of natural light, a central theme for a contemporary art museum, is addressed through a calibrated system that allows for diffused and indirect lighting, avoiding glare and direct radiation on the exhibition surfaces.

The technical drawing highlights the high level of integration between the primary structure, secondary metal components, and the roofing system, conveying the construction complexity that underpins the apparent fluidity of the interior spaces.
