The bridge of Dom Luis I, a 19th-century engineering marvel designed by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel's student, the engineer Theophile Seyrig. It was inaugurated on October 31, 1886.
With two floors and an impressive iron arch, it connects Porto and Vila Nova De Gaia. The upper part is intended for the transit of rail vehicles while the lower part is reserved for the passage of motor vehicles, pedestrians have access to a sidewalk on both floors. The bridge is built on two iron decks, the upper one is approximately 385,25 m long and 62 m high from the river and the lower one is 172 m long and 10 m from the river, both supported by an iron arch with a span of 172 m between the supports and five intermediate pillars, for a total weight of approximately 3000 tons of iron.
