Breakwater tetrapods
Scale 1:100
Breakwater tetrapods.
A tetrapod is a structure, usually made of reinforced concrete, used as a breakwater in coastal protection. The tetrapod is designed to efficiently dissipate the force of waves by allowing water to flow around the structure rather than against it, as happened with older breakwaters. The particular structure of tetrapods allows the energy of the wave front to be dissipated. The shape of tetrapods allows them to fit together, making the structure solid. (Source Wikipedia)
Stability formula for tetrapods
A stability formula has been developed for tetrapods armoring breakwaters of breakwaters based on the test results of the hydraulic model of the present and previous studies. The formula is applicable to breakwaters with various inclination angles. It is also applicable to breakwaters with low crest and different densities if the corresponding terms are incorporated into the formula. The uncertainty of the formula is also described.
