Autocad dwg drawing of an APC uninterruptible power supply (UPS)

An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is an electrical device that provides emergency power to a load when the input power source or utility power fails. A UPS differs from an auxiliary or emergency power system or standby generator in that it provides near-instantaneous protection from input power interruptions by providing energy stored in batteries. The battery run time of most uninterruptible power sources is relatively short (only a few minutes) but sufficient to start a standby power source or to properly shut down the protected equipment.
It is a type of continuous power supply system.

A UPS is typically used to protect hardware such as computers, data centers, telecommunications equipment, or other electrical equipment where an unexpected power outage could cause injury, death, major business disruption, or data loss.
UPS units range in size from units designed to protect a single computer to large units that power entire data centers or buildings.
