Ventilated facade system
Construction detail with 1:20 definition
This section represents a technical detail of a ventilated facade, an external cladding system designed to improve the energy performance and durability of the building, thanks to an air cavity that promotes natural ventilation.
Stratigraphy and main components
- Upper closing metal profile
The system's terminal element, made of metal profile, serves as a finishing and protection element for the top of the ventilated facade. It prevents the entry of rainwater and insects while ensuring system ventilation. - External coating
Finishing panels (in ceramic, stone, fibre cement, composite aluminium or other material) mechanically fixed via clips or hooks (3) to the substructure.
In addition to their aesthetic function, they constitute the first barrier against atmospheric agents. - Cladding fixings
Metal clips or hooks that secure the panels to the substructure. They allow for any thermal expansion movements and facilitate maintenance. - Aluminum substructure
Secondary frame composed of vertical and horizontal profiles in light alloy (extruded aluminum), anchored to the main structure by brackets.
It guarantees the load-bearing capacity of the covering and creates the ventilated cavity. - Air gap
Continuous ventilation space between cladding and thermal insulation.
It allows air to circulate from bottom to top (chimney effect), improving heat dispersion in summer and humidity evaporation in winter. - Anchors to the load-bearing structure
Metal brackets or joints fixed to the structural frame (reinforced concrete or steel).
They transmit the loads of the ventilated facade to the main structure, maintaining the correct spacing and alignment. - Steel profile for insulating support
Intermediate profile that supports the insulation layer and ensures its continuity. - Rock wool thermal insulation
High-density, fire-resistant, vapor-permeable insulation panels.
Positioned on the outside of the load-bearing wall to reduce thermal bridges and improve the energy performance of the envelope. - 500mm I-profile steel
Main structural element of the wall or floor, part of the load-bearing structure. - Waterproofing plastic membrane
Protective layer that prevents water from infiltrating inside.
It is placed above the slab and under the screed, integrated with a vapour barrier and functional layers (screed, concrete floor and corrugated sheet metal).
How the system works
The system ventilated facade it works like a “double skin” wall:
- The outer layer (lining) protects against water and sun.
- The air gap, in combination with the insulating layer, creates a controlled microclimate that improves internal comfort.
- Natural ventilation reduces condensation and extends the life of materials.
Main benefits
- Better thermal and acoustic insulation.
- Protection of the structure from the elements.
- High durability and less maintenance.
- Aesthetic flexibility thanks to the variety of applicable coatings.
- Reduction of energy consumption for heating and cooling.
