Wind in urban areas

Logarithmic wind profile in urban areas
A simplified approach that allows to describe the average profile of a wind above an urban area, i.e. in general in the presence of a canopy of aerodynamic obstacles of significant size and arranged in a compact structure (trees or buildings), is based on the logarithmic profile scheme described in paragraph 2.2 and requires the introduction of a new parameter, the displacement distance. Zd.
Idealized wind profile in an urban area (WMO 2006). The solid thick line represents the trend with altitude of the mean horizontal wind speed u; the thick dashed line represents the completion of the theoretical logarithmic profile near the roofs of the buildings; Zd is the travel distance, Z0 the roughness length, ZH is the average height of buildings, ZF is the thickness of the roughness substrate.
