PAPER FORMATS – ENVELOPES
Standard dimensions of the most common formats
ISO 216 is the standard defined by the International Organization for Standardization to identify some paper formats used in many countries, especially in Europe, for typographical purposes.
In the United States and Canada, a different standard survives which gives rise to the Letter format.
The ISO 216 formats are established on the basis of the ratio 1:√2, that is, the so-called silver sectionPaper formats compliant with the ISO 216 standard (which also includes the common A4 sheets used in photocopiers) are characterised by having sides in the ratio {displaystyle 1:{sqrt {2}}}.
If you split an ISO 216 sheet in half along the long side, you get two sheets that still have a ratio of {displaystyle 1:{sqrt {2}}}.
