The Lake and the Temple of Aesculapius
The architecture of Villa Borghese
The lake and the Temple of Aesculapius are two distinctive elements located within the park of Villa Borghese in Rome. Villa Borghese is a large public park that extends over approximately 80 hectares in the centre of the city and is one of the most popular recreational venues for residents and tourists.
The Pond
This is a man-made body of water located in the northeast section of the park. It is surrounded by a scenic promenade, allowing people to stroll along the banks and enjoy the water views. Small rowboats can be rented at the pond for a short ride. This space is ideal for a relaxing break and offers a peaceful setting away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
The Temple of Aesculapius
This temple is a neoclassical structure located on an artificial island in the middle of the lake. Aesculapius is the Roman god of medicine and healing, equivalent to the Greek god Asclepius. The temple is dedicated to him and was designed by architect Antonio Asprucci in the 18th century. The structure features a large colonnade and a statue of the god Aesculapius holding a serpent, a symbol associated with medicine.
Both the lake and the Temple of Aesculapius contribute to the tranquil and evocative atmosphere within Villa Borghese Park. The park itself is a popular destination for nature lovers, those who want to walk, jog, or simply relax outdoors. In addition to these features, Villa Borghese is also home to some of Rome's main cultural attractions, including museums, art galleries, and theaters.
