Belsito Residential Complex
Rome, 1952-1953 – Project by Ugo Luccichenti
In the heart of the neighborhood Triumphal, in Rome, stands the Belsito Residential Complex, one of the most emblematic works of the post-war period signed by Ugo Shiny. Made between the 1952 and 1953 for General Real Estate Company (SGI), the intervention occupies an entire block between Gold Medal Square and Belsito Street, and represents one of the most significant experiences of Roman residential architecture of the period.
A project between topography and typology
Luccichenti is faced with a highly uneven terrain, characterised by a difference in height of approximately 1,80 metresThe solution adopted is refined: a composition of staggered blocks which adapt to the slope through a staggered arrangement of approximately 80 cm between the various building modules. This measure is not only technical, but also formal—it generates a dynamic visual rhythm, a sequence of solids and voids that enlivens the long urban front.
The complex develops as a unitary but articulated whole, where the typological repetition of the stairwells and the housing modules coexists with the search for compositional varietyIn this sense, Luccichenti demonstrates the ability to transform intensive construction into a laboratory of architectural language, attentive to both the urban and domestic scales.
Architecture and everyday life
At the base of the complex, a large continuous shelter It serves as a unifying element for the various buildings. It houses shops, entrances, and a covered shopping area, designed as a relationship space between the private and public dimensions of the neighborhood. At the corner between the square and the street there originally stood a elevated restaurant, conceived as the fulcrum of the system: a suspended architectural sign, then transformed in the 1950s into post office.
The facades, animated by protruding balconies and prominent stairwells, reveal a modern and plastic compositional sensitivity. The original details – such as the sliding sunshades and colored mosaic coverings – accentuated the interplay of surfaces, materials, and shadows, creating a dense yet balanced architectural language. Many of these decorative elements, unfortunately, have been lost or altered over time.
A lesson in balance
Il Belsito Complex It is today considered one of the most mature moments in Ugo Luccichenti's research.
They coexist in it rationality and experimentation, seriality and individuality, construction technique and attention to formThe work is part of the trend of quality residential construction that characterised Rome in the 1950s, an era in which urban growth was intertwined with the attempt to define a new modern architectural landscape.
In this project, Luccichenti manages to blend the domestic and urban scales, combining housing needs, social relations, and architectural composition. A challenging yet precious balance, which can still be felt today when walking along the portico or observing the terraces.
