Church of the Highway of the Sun

Church of San Giovanni Battista designed by Giovanni Michelucci

La Church of the Autostrada del SoleDesigned by Giovanni Michelucci Inaugurated in 1964, it is one of the most intense and radical works of twentieth-century Italian architecture. It is not just a religious building, but a true architectural manifesto, conceived as a place of reflection and remembrance for the victims of work and the road, particularly those linked to the construction of the Autostrada del Sole.

An architecture without a facade

One of the most striking aspects of the church is the absence of a traditional façade. The building never presents a single main "front": it is a sculptural, irregular, almost geological mass, which changes appearance depending on the vantage point. Michelucci rejects any celebratory monumentality, instead choosing a form that seems to grow from the ground, like a rock shaped by time.

The church's integration into the landscape is crucial: it interacts with the highway infrastructure without imitating it, but rather contrasting it with a human, introspective, almost primordial dimension.

Structure as form

The entire building is defined by a complex exposed reinforced concrete structure. There is no distinction between structure and architecture: pillars, partitions, and the roof become expressive forms. The large inclined ribs and broken surfaces create a dynamic whole, far removed from the idea of a static, symmetrical space.

The roof is one of the most characteristic elements: a sequence of inclined planes that rise and fall in a continuous movement, almost like a wave frozen in the concrete.

The interiors: a space in motion

Upon entering, one feels welcomed into a space that envelops rather than contains. The interior is not organized according to a traditional basilica plan: the nave unfolds irregularly, with flowing paths and constant changes in height.

Natural light enters from above and from the sides, filtered through irregular openings that accentuate the dramatic character of the space. It is not a uniform light, but a "living" light, which sculpts the concrete and accompanies the visitor along the path to the altar.

The altar itself is not an isolated element, but an integral part of the space, almost carved into the material of the building.

Poor materials, very powerful expression

Reinforced concrete dominates, but it's never cold or neutral. The rough surfaces, marked by formwork, tell the story of the construction process and convey a powerful material impact. Alongside the concrete, simple materials appear: stone, wood, and metal, used without decorative finishes, in keeping with the idea of essentiality and constructive authenticity.

Everything contributes to creating an intense, almost ascetic atmosphere, in which architecture becomes an emotional experience even before becoming a functional space.

A work out of time

The Church of the Autostrada del Sole is a difficult building to classify: it's not Brutalist in the strict sense, it's not Expressionist, it's not Modernist in the most orthodox sense. It's a deeply personal work, reflecting Michelucci's humanistic vision and his idea of architecture as a place of encounter, suffering, and hope.

Even today, decades later, it remains an essential reference for those who study contemporary sacred architecture and, more generally, for those who see architecture as a powerful narrative and civic tool.

The photo gallery allows you to fully grasp its complexity: from the sculptural exterior to the structural details, from the interior views to the relationship between light and material. A building to be observed slowly, letting yourself be guided by its irregular forms and the silent strength of the concrete.
