House of Memory, Milan Porta Nuova
A civic building between public space, history and contemporaneity
In the Porta Nuova district, a symbol of contemporary and ever-changing Milan, the House of Memory It stands out for its silent yet highly evocative presence. It does not seek dialogue with the height or spectacularity of the surrounding architecture, but chooses a different path: that of symbolic density, of the story, of the shared memory.
Designed by the studio baukuh Inaugurated in 2015, the House of Memory was created as a place dedicated to the preservation and transmission of the historical memory of twentieth-century Italy. A public building that houses archives, association offices, and meeting spaces, but above all, it offers the city a civil architecture, capable of speaking to everyone, even to those who observe it only in passing.
The building has a very simple shape: a rectangular parallelepiped measuring 20 x 35 m, 17,5 metres high.
An architecture that tells
The building's most recognizable element is undoubtedly the façade: a large mosaic of polychrome terracotta tiles that envelops the entire volume and becomes a narrative surface. Portraits of anonymous faces and scenes from Italy's collective history emerge as images suspended between figuration and abstraction, legible from afar and increasingly fragmented as one approaches.
It is an architectural skin that does not decorate, but communicatesMemory, here, is not celebrated rhetorically: it is presented as something fragile, composed of fragments, of individual stories that together construct a collective identity.
Compact volume, deep meaning
Compositionally, the House of Memory presents itself as a simple and compact, almost introverted volume. This is a conscious choice that reinforces the institutional and reflective nature of the building. Inside, the spaces are clearly and functionally organized, connected by a yellow spiral staircase, a strong and recognizable element that introduces a dynamic and contemporary note to the interior.
The architecture avoids any superfluous gesture and entrusts its message to the material, the light, and the relationship between interior and exterior. It is a building that does not impose, but invites pause, observation, and reflection.
A place in the city, for the city
Inserted in the context of New doorThe House of Memory represents a point of balance between the historic Milan and the one projected towards the future. In a neighborhood marked by large real estate developments and iconic architecture, this building chooses to be measured, almost against the grain, recalling that urban innovation cannot ignore an awareness of the past.
The photo gallery highlights precisely this aspect: the expressive power of the façade, the relationship with the public space, the material details and the chromatic contrasts, restoring the image of an architecture that does not limit itself to being seen, but asks to be read.
The House of Memory is, first and foremost, a place of civic responsibility. A work of architecture that demonstrates how even a building can be a narrative tool, a custodian of stories, and an active participant in urban life.
