Laporte House
A discreet icon of modern elegance
designed by Gio Ponti (with Antonio Fornaroli, Eugenio Soncini) in 1935 and located in via Benedetto Brin 12, in the Fiera-CityLife district of Milan, Laporte House is one of the lesser-known but highly refined residential works of the great Milanese master. Designed for the industrialist Anthony Laporte, the house fits discreetly but decisively into the urban fabric of the post-war city, blending bourgeois functionality and modern language with great elegance.
The main facade is distinguished by the geometric cleaning and for the wise rhythm of the openings. The design is sober, almost minimal, but full of that aesthetic research that is typical of Ponti: essentiality, rigor, attention to detail. The windows are modulated according to a precise compositional order, and the covering in light plaster helps create a soft and dynamic play of light.
Inside, Gio Ponti develops refined living spaces, with bright and airy spaces, playing on variations in height and depth. The house is a perfect example of his concept of an “Italian house”, which combines the tradition of domestic living with the lightness and modernity of rational architecture. There is no lack of valuable design details, such as custom-designed furnishings and meticulous finishes, which reflect the architect's taste forintegration between architecture and design.
Although less famous than his other Milanese creations, Casa Laporte represents an important stage in Ponti's journey, testifying to its role in the reconstruction and evolution of modern living in Italy.
