Olympic Swimming Stadium

Designed by architects Enrico Del Debbio and Annibale Vitellozzi.

Lo Olympic Swimming Stadium It is a sports facility located inside the Foro Italico complex in Rome, designed to host the swimming, diving, water polo and modern pentathlon swimming competitions during the 1960 Olympic Games. Inaugurated in 1959, it was designed by the architects Enrico Del Debbio e Hannibal Vitellozzi.

Main features

  • 50m outdoor Olympic swimming pool: with stands that can accommodate up to 12.000 spectators.
  • Diving pool: adjacent to the main pool, used for diving competitions.
  • Innovative technologies for the time: During the 1960 Olympics, the stadium was equipped with a large scoreboard to display the results, a split-second electric timing system and an electric system for the judges' voting, which were considered cutting-edge for the time.

Renovations and subsequent use

The Olympic Swimming Stadium has undergone several renovations to host important international events:

  • 1983: European Swimming Championships.
  • 1994: World Swimming Championships.
  • 2009: World Swimming Championships.
  • 2022: European Swimming and Diving Championships.

During these events, the facility was upgraded with new stands, LED lighting systems and connections between the various structures of the complex.
