Architecture and structure
With its 231 meters high (including the steel spire), the UniCredit Tower is the tallest building in Italy.
The main body reaches 146 metersAdded to these is the helical spire that amplifies its verticality and makes it a distinctive landmark visible from much of the city.
La spire reaches a height of approximately 80,5 meters. It was mounted on October 15, 2011, through a spectacular operation which saw the use of a powerful helicopter and a team of specialized techniciansThe event, visible from various points of the city, attracted the attention of numerous citizens curious to witness the final phase of construction.
The tower is composed of 31 floors above ground and 3 underground levels. It houses offices, reception areas, and areas dedicated to services for the banking group's employees. The semicircular plan creates a dynamic, concave profile that opens towards the Piazza Gae Aulenti, the nerve centre and pedestrian area of the complex, designed by the same studio.
Le glass curtain walls The aluminum reflects natural light and the urban skyline, accentuating the visual connection between the building and its surroundings. The use of transparent materials and the curved shape help reduce the volumetric impact. This gives the tower a visual lightness unusual for a skyscraper of this size.
Technology and sustainability
The UniCredit Tower was designed with criteria of environmental sustainability,Energy-efficient lighting systems, highly efficient air conditioning systems, and rainwater harvesting are all features. Furthermore, solar-control glass facades allow for extensive use of natural light.
The building has obtained the LEED Gold certification, an international recognition that certifies high-level energy and environmental performance.
The Porta Nuova complex
The tower is part of a larger architectural system, which includes two other buildings of lower height arranged in sequence. This forms a unified and harmonious whole. At the base is the Piazza Gae Aulenti, an elevated public space with fountains, shops and light installations that transform the area into a highly evocative urban landscape at night.
Around the complex there are other iconic architectures of contemporary Milan. Among these, the Vertical Forest by Stefano Boeri, the Unipol tower and the Lombardy Palace by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners. These bear witness to the city's new architectural identity.
