The First Park Overlooking the Tiber

A New Green Space for Rome - Between ecology, wood, the Tiber and landscape.

On March 21, 2025, Rome inaugurated its first Parco d'Affaccio sul Tiber, located between Ponte Risorgimento and Ponte Matteotti, in the Flaminio district. This project, part of the interventions for the Jubilee, aims to bring the city closer to its river, offering citizens a new green space of 1,6 hectares.

A Sustainable Architecture

The park features a suspended walkway, made of larch wood, that with a length of 570 meters winds along the bank of the Tiber, offering panoramic views of the river. Along the path, four terraces furnished with benches serve as outdoor classrooms for educational and naturalistic activities or simple relaxation.

To ensure the safety of visitors, a protection made of natural fiber ropes. This choice not only ensures the protection of adults and children, but also integrates aesthetically with the natural environment of the park.
The light wood has been treated with water-repellent impregnants e UV protectors.

Flora: Naturalization and Biodiversity - an explosion of green

A key aspect of the project is the renaturalization of the area. New trees and flowers have been planted to create a welcoming environment for insects and microfauna. The vegetation has been selected to ensure seasonal blooms and reduce the need for maintenance.
They have been planted about 100 trees e 2.000 shrubs, with the aim of restoring ecological balances and promoting the increase of biodiversity. Although the species were not specified, it is likely that native plants typical of the Roman river environment were chosen, such as willows, poplars and alders, to ensure a suitable habitat for the local fauna.

Fauna: A refuge for wildlife

The park offers an ideal habitat for various species of fauna. In particular, a mural depicting some herons, symbol of the rebirth of the area. The presence of these birds indicates a favorable environment for other avifauna species. Furthermore, the restored vegetation favors the presence of insects and microfauna, contributing to the creation of a balanced ecosystem.

Reclamation and Valorization

Before the intervention, the area was in a state of degradation, with piles of waste. Thanks to an investment of 800.000 euros, 700 garbage trucks were removed, transforming the former WWF oasis into a naturalistic oasis accessible to all.
