Sports Hall – Rome 1960

Pier Luigi Nervi - Rome Sports Hall, 1956-1958

The Sports Hall is a multifunctional building, mainly used for sports, which is located in Rome.
Conceived and designed in 1956 by thearchitect Annibale Vitellozzi and engineer Pier Luigi Nervi, and built between 1956 and 1957 as a facility intended to host some events of the XVII Olympic Games in Rome, is still in operation and hosts sporting events and concerts.

The project presented by Vitellozzi consisted of a circular structure of just under 60 metres in diameter, not dissimilar to the contemporary Palazzo dello Sport by Marcello Piacentini and Nervi himself but, unlike the latter, surmounted by a dome covering that protrudes from the perimeter of the hall by approximately 10 metres; the diameter of the external covering is approximately 78 metres and the overall area of ​​the structure is approximately 4 square metres.
