ISO 216 is the standard defined by the International Organization for Standardization to identify certain paper formats used in many countries, especially in Europe, for typographic uses.
In the United States and Canada, a different standard survives, giving rise to the Letter format.

ISO 216 formats are established on the basis of the 1: √2 ratio, i.e. the so-called silver section. Paper formats conforming to the ISO 216 standard (which also includes the common A4 sheets used in copiers) are characterized by having the sides in the
report {displaystyle 1:{sqrt {2}}}.

If you divide an ISO 216 sheet in half on the long side, you get two sheets that continue to report {displaystyle 1:{sqrt {2}}}.
