The world of BIM design is expanding day by day, enriched with professional figures who can respond to the needs required by the model.

It is important to remember that when we talk about BIM, we are referring to a design method that involves all the management processes of the building, from the initial evaluation, to the definition of the final project, its engineering and economic estimates, up to the closure of the construction site.

What are the main BIM figures?

Such a complex design software therefore requires trained figures who are capable of carrying out the various responsibilities entrusted to them. Nowadays, with the necessary differences, these types of professional identities have been identified and defined:

  • BIM Specialist
  • BIM Coordinator
  • BIM Manager
  • BIM Expert
  • CDE Manager

Let's try to give a definition to each of these figures

First of all, the BIM Specialist takes on the task of making all the necessary changes to models and objects related to the project. He is therefore in all respects the armed wing of the BIM work group, taking care of using the software to model the information according to his specialization.

If the BIM Specialist is the arm, the BIM Coordinator is the joint that holds the parts together. He carries out numerous coordination and planning activities, aimed at ensuring effective management of the design process. Among the tasks we find:

  • Participation in the drafting of the BIM Execution Plan
  • Coordination of the information content of the various models by defining the levels of detail
  • Calling coordination meetings with BIM Managers

At the top of the pyramid remains the BIM Manager, on whom fall all the positions of responsibility, inherent to the relationship and evolution of the latter with the company, the ability to translate data into estimates and propose effective strategies.

The Bim Expert is, instead, exactly one step before the BIM Manager. In fact, in terms of skills, he must be able to deal with the management and interoperability of advanced BIM systems.

Finally, the CDE Manager, which is a professional profile introduced by the UNI 11337-7 standard, is a figure closely linked to the data sharing environment and is responsible for verifying the correctness of the entire flow of information between the parties involved, in addition to ensuring data protection.
