Copenhagen never ceases to amaze

Copenaghen – Holmene

In Copenhagen, the imagination seems to have no limits and to reclaim the industrial district, Holmene will be built, a small archipelago that will host wind farms, research centers, green spaces. South of the city, Holmene means “islets” and will extend over three square kilometers adding 17 kilometers of coastline to the existing coastline. Starting in 2022, the works are expected to last 18 years at a cost of 425 million euros and the area will host the earth from the excavations of the extension of the capital’s metro.
This is a program that, in the intentions of the Danish government and the municipality of Hvidovre, contemplates technological innovation and sustainability, going to rehabilitate the area that in the sixties had been cleared to build factories.

The project, carried out by the Urban Power company, includes the construction of a barrier to contain coastal erosion and any floods with an increase in the area that can be used for various activities, of a productive type, for sport and leisure, with islands that cannot be visited. and intended to welcome unspoiled nature. The largest island will host projects for sustainable technologies and the largest waste-to-energy plant in Northern Europe, where biodegradable waste and Copenhagen wastewater will become biogas and clean water.

Clean energy will come from the wind farm and the entire operation should be able to activate several hundred companies with over ten thousand jobs.
The project is self-financed as the new islands dispose of the millions of tons of land produced by the underground and the sale of building land will cover the costs of infrastructure. The project aims to re-naturalize the area by creating cliffs or beaches around the islets, promoting biodiversity.

Copenaghen – Parkipelago

The system of islets, Parkipelago, Copenhagen Island, on a smaller scale, is the one envisaged with wooden floating islands that will be inserted in the area of the port of Copenhagen. This is a project by the Fokstrot studio and aims to create islets that can be easily moved around the port area. A prototype already exists which hosted public meetings and a photographic exhibition, consisting of an island of about 25 square meters. The islands, anchored in the port, are made of steel and recycled material, with wood cladding. They host trees and bushes, wild herbs, plants and flowers of the place, and will be a repopulation place for insects and birds in the upper part and for molluscs and algae in the lower part, favoring the repopulation of fish.

Each islet will have a particular function, from the cafeteria to the mini-spa with sauna, a refreshment area to have a snack or enjoy a drink, an islet will be a floating stage. The islets in winter can be brought together and brought closer to the port, while in summer they can be moved further out to sea to be reached by swimming or by light boats.
Even if not everyone appreciates these initiatives, Copenhagen, a sustainable city, never ceases to broaden horizons, to amaze and make us dream of a fantastic world in every sense.
