The Post palace of Aventino Roma Ostiense, A. Libera – M. De Renzi, Rome Italy 1933-1934, is a post office building in Rome located in Via Marmorata, in the San Saba district.
It houses the Roma Ostiense post office (Fractional 55645).
History
The construction of this post office, together with those of Viale Mazzini, Via Taranto and Piazza Bologna, was part of the development plan of the City, which provided for the decentralization of services in areas outside the historic core of the city. In 1932 the competition for the construction of the work, announced by the Ministry of Communications, was won by the architect Adalberto Libera.
Libera and Mario De Renzi also presented for the same call for projects competition for the postal buildings in piazza Bologna, viale Mazzini and via Taranto, two signed by Libera and two signed by De Renzi, as the notice required the signing of only one designer. For this reason De Renzi is often not mentioned in the projects and only later he was co-author of the Post Office in Via Marmorata.
Description
Entrance to the public: The building has, on a wide flight of steps, a rigorous symmetrical layout, based on geometric relationships and on the golden section. It is divided into three U-shaped volumes used for different functions. Covered in smooth white marble, the front has a portico that closes the rectangular courtyard. The terminals have a pattern of crossed diagonals that hide the internal stairways.
