Proxemics is the semiological discipline that studies gestures, behavior, space and distances within communication, both verbal and nonverbal.
We all have a space around our body, a distance that envelops us, separates us and protects us from the rest of the world.
The space that exists between us and others is not neutral, in fact if a person gets “too close” to us, we begin to experience particular psycho-physical states or emotional variations such as “annoyance” or “embarrassment” and we react accordingly by restoring the “right” distances, just as if he or she moves “too far” away from us.
