Masters’ Houses by Walter Gropius

Walter Gropius – Gropiusallee 38, Dessau Germany, 1925-1926

Gropius designed a series of semi-detached houses for the masters of design who taught at the Bauhaus. This small neighborhood, nestled in a pine forest near the school building itself, was an idyllic home for artists such as Lyonel Feininger, Oskar Schlemmer and Gropius himself. They were abandoned in the 1930s, when Germany plunged into war and suffered years of damage caused by military conflict and neglect.
The houses have been renovated, to be completed are those of Walter Gropius and the artist László Moholy-Nagy. Both structures were destroyed during an aerial bombing of Dessau during the Second World War.
