Bauhaus in Dessau

Walter Gropius – Bauhaus in Dessau, Gropiusallee 38, Dessau, Germany, 1919-1925

The Bauhaus building is a reference point for German rationalism. It is probable that Gropius suffered the influences of Soviet constructivism, quite influential in modern architecture and in the industrial design of the time. It develops respecting the urban fabric in which it is inserted, opening up towards the city with the enormous curtain walls that respond to the need to give light to the workshops but which also have an "ideological implication": in a democratic community "the houses are of glass ", nothing hides, everything communicates, and school is the generating nucleus, the model of the democratic community"

The L-shaped building is conceived as a slow rotation of volumes, a "form in formation", regulated by a "mass of inertia": the building of study-dwellings, a resting place, following the principle of machine determining space and forms.
